Good care in Critical Care

Settling in as well as possible to the Augusta/VA lifestyle....restaurant food, lack of home.farm/garden and city....city...city with lots of homeless people.

Dustin is doing fairly well despite too many drugs in critical care. They have cultured his lungs again after 3 bronchoscopy's and he has pseudomonas and enterobactin. They have started him on 2 new antibiotics, he continues to be on oxycodone every 6 hours, ativan for anxiety and then they started giving him extra morphine for pain when they move him and clean him etc. Rick and I came in today and boy he was out there. After some time with him, we draw him back to reality. Sometimes it can be a fight but we "get him back". He is having bowel movements on his own which is a miracle and the fecal management bag has been removed. We are so grateful for the little/big things.

Overall his lungs seem to be much better as well.

Please pray against itching! I don't know if it is a drug side effect or what but the itching can begin to torment him. Again, our job is to try to defocus him off that and on to something else. Today, Rick and I went to the library and I got some more books on different facts. Who knows. after all of this we may be ready for a game show as we learn all of this trivia."Are you smarter than a fifth grader?" was getting a little old. We are also reading a book one of his teachers sent from his film school on creative writing. It is a really fun book and as much as I dislike writing, it is even getting me excited to take off with pen and paper.

Rick will be going back tomorrow. We have been blessed by Pastor Henry and Donna to focus on Dustin however, we do feel a responsibility to keep up with as much as possible at work, home and cabins. I will be staying for awhile and have even looked at a small part-time job at a local lunch spot that has awesome homemade soups, sandwiches and desserts. We found it the other day and brought home quarts of homemade soup to make us feel that we have not been sucked up by fast food. It is a small breakfast /lunch spot that has been in business for 60 years and run by really nice people. They had a sign today for part-time help and I happened to ask them about it. Not for money etc, but for a break from the hospital. I am not a shopper to go take breaks at a mall etc, you can only go to so many museums and movies and thus to me a might be a respite for the emotionally exhausting gruel of every day at hospitals. I may decide to talk to them on Monday and see if I can work like 11-2 several days a week and then be with Dustin until 8pm. It will give me a bit of pocket change to pay for my room and mostly interact with people besides the medical profession all day.

It will also keep Dustin and I from becoming co-dependent on each other out of fear, or guilt. He has had me non-stop for the past week and every little nuance , I take care of. At age 23, I certainly don't want to spoil him now! I do plan to be here through the next month or so as he goes through the surgeries to establish a stable airway.

Rick and I had our leftover "homemade" dinner from the other night and he and the dogs will be heading home. May the HOly Spirit show you how to pray.

love to each and all,
mary pat

What a trooper you are! I am delighted that you are writing again. You are a very good, expressive writer and it really helps us pray for you.
Mary Pat at the lunch counter. I can so see that because you are so friendly and the folks would get lovin' with their soup. If you are hired, it won't be for the pocket change. It will be because God has some divine assignments for you.
We will take care of Rick for you.
Much love...

Hi y'all, it's been a while since my last post. But I just wanted to encourage the four of you. Nerina, first of all though we've never met, I've heard so mutch about you, and I think you an awesome girlfriend for Dustin. Dustin, at times you may think your not doing much at all, but the truth is your doing an awesome job. Rick, not that you need me to authenticate you, but I think you are a model husband. Mary Pat, I think it's awesome that you found something to give you a break. I am so glad you're writing. They overcame by the blood of the Lamb and the word of there testimony.
